Description

This cheesy tuna sandwich is a warm, melty twist on the classic tuna salad sandwich—quick to make, incredibly satisfying, and loaded with flavor. Featuring creamy tuna mixed with celery, red onion, lemon juice, and a hint of Dijon, it’s layered with shredded cheddar and mozzarella, then grilled between slices of buttery golden bread until perfectly crisp. Ideal for lunch, dinner, or comfort food cravings, this sandwich is easy to customize and guaranteed to please both kids and adults alike.

Ingredients

Scale

2 cans (5 oz each) tuna, drained

⅓ cup mayonnaise

1 stalk celery, finely chopped

2 tablespoons red onion, finely chopped

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

1 tablespoon lemon juice (fresh)

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon black pepper

1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (optional)

4 tablespoons butter, softened

8 slices of bread (white, sourdough, or whole grain)

Instructions

Prepare the Tuna Mixture: In a medium bowl, mix tuna, mayonnaise, celery, red onion, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, salt, and pepper until well combined.

Assemble Sandwiches: Butter one side of each bread slice. Place 4 slices buttered side down on a clean surface. Spread tuna mix evenly on them, then top with shredded cheese. Close with remaining bread, buttered side up.

Grill: Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Grill sandwiches 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and cheese is melted.

Serve: Let cool for a minute, slice, and serve warm.

Notes

Bread choice matters: Use sturdy bread like sourdough or whole grain to avoid sogginess. White bread works but may get too soft when grilled.

Drain tuna thoroughly: Excess moisture will make the sandwich fall apart or steam instead of crisp.

Cheese blend tip: Combining sharp cheddar with mozzarella creates a perfect balance of bold flavor and gooey melt
